Vaporization behaviour of Pu-Cd intermetallic compounds

Nakajima, Kunihisa; Nakazono, Yoshihisa; Arai, Yasuo

Recent Advances in Actinide Science, p.448 - 450, 2006/06

A pyrochemical process for the metallurgical treatment of the spent nuclear fuels contains the Cd-distillation step, where Pu is recovered as a residue. For understanding this Cd-ditillation behavior the samples of PuCd$$_{2}$$+PuCd$$_{4}$$ and PuCd$$_{4}$$+PuCd$$_{6}$$ were prepared and Knudsen-cell mass-spectrometric measurements were carried out to determine the vapour pressures of Cd(g) over these samples. Further, the thermodynamic quantities of PuCd$$_{2}$$ and PuCd$$_{4}$$ were evaluated from these vapour pressures.

Nishi, Tsuyoshi; Takano, Masahide; Ito, Akinori; Akabori, Mitsuo; Minato, Kazuo; Kizaki, Minoru

JAERI-Tech 2005-051, 13 Pages, 2005/09

JAERI-Tech-2005-051.pdf:1.38MB

An apparatus has been developed to measure the thermal diffusivities of minor actinide (MA) compounds. By installing the laser flash apparatus in a glove box with highly purified inert gas atmosphere, the thermal diffusivities measurement of MA compounds of $$alpha$$-decay nuclides was enabled. A new sample holder has been also developed to measure the thermal diffusivities of very small samples. The performance of this new apparatus was confirmed by measuring the thermal diffusivities of small samples of tantalum, nickel and cerium oxides. The thermal diffusivity values obtained in this work agreed well with the literature values and the values measured by a conventional thermal diffusivities measurement apparatus. Accordingly, this apparatus was found to be useful for thermal diffusivities measurement of MA compounds.

The orientation nature of multilayer organosilicon compounds has been investigated by measuring the dependence of the Si K-shell near-edge X-ray absorption fine structures (NEXAFS) on the polarization angle. Two approaches helped to elucidate the orientation mechanism: the substitution effect and the deposition-rate dependence. The orientation angles of Si-X bond axes were obtained for trimethylsilyl halides, (CH$$_{3}$$)$$_{3}$$SiX (X =F Cl Br I NCO, condensed on Cu(111) at a low (82 K) temperature: the angles are 60, 73, 61, 55, and 55 degrees with respect to the surface normal, for X =F, Cl, Br, I, and NCO, respectively. Chloride (X =Cl) produces the most parallel tilt angle. The specific orientation nature of chloride is attributed to its strong dipole moment as well as the regular tetrahedron shape of the molecule. The molecular volumes calculated verify this view. Furthermore, deposition rates are found to greatly influence the growth manner: namely, high deposition rates led to a slightly perpendicular orientation of Si-X bond axis.

Journal of the Physical Society of Japan, 74(5), p.1582 - 1597, 2005/05

We investigated the magnetic property of typical uranium compounds by measuring the magnetic susceptibility in an extended temperature range up to about 800 K. The magnetic susceptibility follows the Curie-Weiss law for a localized 5$$f^2$$-electron compound UPd$$_3$$ and a ferromagnetic insulator UFe$$_4$$P$$_{12}$$. In most of the investigated compounds we observed a crossover effect of the 5$$f$$ electrons from a low-temperature itinerant nature to a high-temperature localized one. This is found to be characteristic for ferromagnetic superconductors such as UGe$$_{2}$$ and UIr, and also for antiferromagnets like USb$$_{2}$$ or UNiSb$$_{2}$$. To assess an extension of this characteristic property in the uranium compounds we also investigated typical 5$$f$$-itinerant compounds like UGa$$_{3}$$ and UPtGa$$_5$$. The crossover effect is essentially important in heavy fermion compounds such as UPt$$_3$$, UPd$$_2$$Al$$_3$$ and URu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$. Even in the paramagnetic compound of UB$$_4$$, the magnetic susceptibility is not temperature-independent, but approaches a 5$$f$$-localized tendency at high temperatures. Since the samples were single crystals, we were also able to trace the evolution of the magnetic anisotropy. The high-temperature anisotropic susceptibility data were analyzed on the basis of the crystalline electric field scheme.

Corrosion behavior of Al-surface-treated steels in liquid Pb-Bi in a pot

Kurata, Yuji; Futakawa, Masatoshi; Saito, Shigeru

Journal of Nuclear Materials, 335(3), p.501 - 507, 2004/12

Corrosion tests were performed in oxygen-saturated liquid Pb-Bi at 450$$^{circ}$$C and 550$$^{circ}$$C in a pot for 3000h for Al-surface-treated steels containing various levels of Cr contents. The Al surface treatments were achieved using a gas diffusion method and a melt dipping method. Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$, FeAl$$_{2}$$ and AlCr$$_{2}$$ produced by the gas diffusion method exhibited corrosion resistance to liquid Pb-Bi, while the surface layer produced by the melt dipping method suffered a severe corrosion attack. Fe$$_{4}$$Al$$_{13}$$ and Fe$$_{2}$$Al$$_{5}$$ produced by the melt dipping method disappeared during the corrosion test at 550$$^{circ}$$C and only FeAl remained.

Preparation of epitaxial TiO$$_{2}$$ films by PLD for photocatalyst applications

Yamaki, Tetsuya; Sumita, Taishi; Yamamoto, Shunya; Miyashita, Atsumi

Journal of Crystal Growth, 237-239(Part1), p.574 - 579, 2002/04

Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) with a KrF excimer laser was used to prepare epitaxial TiO$$_{2}$$ films on a (0001) sapphire substrate. The crystalline structure and surface morphology of the films were then investigated as a function of the laser power density in the PLD. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy results showed that the films were composed of the (100) oriented rutile phase with a small amount of the (001) oriented anatase. The anatase-to-rutile ratio in such phase-mixed films was controlled by the laser power; the ratio increased as the power density decreased. From atomic force microscopy observations, the film deposited at the lowest power was found to have a rough surface consisting of coarse grains. This film exhibited the best photocatalytic performance during the decomposition of the organic dyes possibly due to the maximum relative content of anatase and the large surface area.

Amorphization from the quenched high-pressure phase in III-V and II-VI compounds

Mori, Yuki*; Kato, Sayuri*; Mori, Hiroko*; Katayama, Yoshinori; Tsuji, Kazuhiko*

Review of High Pressure Science and Technology, 7, p.353 - 355, 1998/03

The temperature dependence of phase transitions in GaSb, AlSb, GaAs, GaP, InAs, ZnSe, and CdTe are studied by X-ray diffraction measurements under pressure upto 30 GPa at temperatures of 90-300K. The phase transitions depend on paths in a pressure-temperature phase diagram. The structure of the recovered phase after decompression depends on the ionicity in bonding: amorphous for small ionicity, the stable zincblende structure for large ionicity, and microcrystalline or moderate ionicity. These results are discussed by using a configuration-coordinate model.
